Boglins Movie in the Works at Mattel Films

Boglins, the rubber hand puppets introduced by Mattel in the 1980s, are getting their own movie. At Mattel Films, there are many projects currently in development from the company's IP library, and this month's release of Barbie is just the start of many to come. There's a new article published by The New Yorker that details many of the various projects in the works, and it's revealed that there are plans to make a movie based on Boglins. This comes after the company had spent ten months of negotiations to secure the rights to Boglins as many "millennial directors and screenwriters" were expressing their interest in taking it on.

“This is a new activation for us—they’re these really weird, fleshy monster creatures," says Mattel Films' "resident genre nerd," Andrew Scannell. "I had a bunch of them. They’re very bizarre.”

Described by Mattel Films' Elizabeth Bassin as a "little gross," Boglins were originally introduced in the first place as a way to capitalize on the success of Gremlins in the 1980s. Now, the Boglins could be going full-circle, as their movie will be taking some inspiration from Gremlins. The idea of the Boglins movie is that it would be something similar to Gremlins, but with a spin on the story.

“We’re thinking Gremlins-ish, but with a twist,” as Mattel Films' Kevin McKeon puts it, adding that the hope was for Boglins to be the companhy's "big Halloween movie."

"We’ll get some tonal comps," McKeon added, noting that they're working on figuring out the right vibe before hiring screenwriters. "We’ll build a deck. We’ll figure out what the overall story could be.”
