New Game of Thrones Prequel Series Reportedly Starts Filming Summer 2024

According to a new entry on ProductionList.com, things are all set to move forward on the next Game of Thrones spin-off - The Hedge Knight. Announced as a straight-to-series order from HBO, the show will reportedly set cameras rolling this summer, which would mean it would most likely be aiming to hit screens sometime in 2025. Of course, this year sees the return of House of the Dragon, which is setting up its second season. It seems like if all goes to plan, these two shows - and potentially more - could work in tandem for the next few years.

The new prequel's full title is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight. It follows the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall, aka Dunk, alongside a young Aegon V Targaryen, aka Egg, coinciding with recent rumors of an Aegon-based prequel getting set up at HBO. Martin is also said to be personally serving as a writer on the series and will executive produce with franchise producers Ira Parker, Ryan Condal, and Vince Gerardis.

The official synopsis for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is as follows:

“A century before the events of ‘Game of Thrones,’ two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”

‘Game of Thrones’ Spinoff ‘The Hedge Knight’ Gets 2025 Release Date

Dunk and Egg keep journeying closer to their HBO debut.

On Friday, Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav gave an update on the next Game of Thrones spinoff series: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight (a title that seems destined to be changed to something that doesn’t have “Knight” twice).

“[Creator and executive producer] George R.R. Martin is in preproduction for the new spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which will premiere in late 2025 on Max,” Zaslav said.

The show is expected to begin production sometime this year.

Given that House of the Dragon is launching its second season this summer, the Knight of the Seven Kingdoms date next year raises the possibility of HBO settling into a flow of having a Thrones drama each year (assuming both shows can turn around their next seasons within two years).

“Looking ahead, we’ve got one of the best lineups in the history of HBO,” Zaslav added. “This next quarter, we’ll have Hacks and House of the Dragon, followed by DC’s The Penguin and the new Dune series. Then in 2025, we’ll kick off the year with the new season of The White Lotus, followed by The Last of Us and Euphoria, just to name a few.”

As reported earlier this month, HBO is also developing an Aegon’s Conquest prequel series from The Batman: Part II writer Mattson Tomlin. Other ideas set in Martin’s fantasy world are also in development, though only House of the Dragon and Knight of the Seven Kingdoms have been greenlit.

The Hedge Knight is based on Martin’s popular trio of Dunk and Egg novellas, which chronicle the story of “Dunk” (the future Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, Ser Duncan the Tall) and “Egg” (the future king Aegon V Targaryen) as they wander Westeros having adventures roughly 100 years before the events of the novels.

The description: “A century before the events of Game of Thrones, two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros … a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”
