Beetlejuice 2: Tim Burton & Michael Keaton to Return, Production Eyeing May Start Date

Development on the long-gestating legacy sequel, Beetlejuice 2, seems to be finally ramping up. Following news that Wednesday and Scream VI star Jenna Ortega is now circling a lead role in the project, The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Beetlejuice director Tim Burton is expected to return to the director’s chair, with star Michael Keaton reprising the title role.

Not only that, but it is also now being reported that Beetlejuice 2 is eyeing a production start in either late May or early June this year, with filming expected to take place in London. So, could audiences at last see Beetlejuice summoned once again after all these years?

Released way, way back in the before time of 1988, Beetlejuice is directed by Tim Burton, and written by Michael McDowell, Larry Wilson, and Warren Skaaren. Starring Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Jeffrey Jones, Catherine O'Hara, Winona Ryder, and Michael Keaton, this gothic tale ghosts and ghouls begins when newly deceased couple, Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin as Barbara and Adam Maitland respectively, contact the devious "bio-exorcist" Beetlejuice, bringing him up from the Netherworld in order to scare away the new inhabitants of their old house — a house they are currently haunting.

Beetlejuice was both a critical and commercial success upon release, with the project remaining one of the most beloved in the decade-spanning careers of both director Tim Burton and actor Michael Keaton. The success of the first movie spawned an animated series, several video games, and a stage musical, but never the sequel that fans have been waiting for. Not yet, anyway...

"It Had To Feel Handmade": Michael Keaton Praises Beetlejuice 2 For Using Practical Effects Over Too Much CGI

Michael Keaton praises Beetlejuice Beetlejuice for using practical effects instead of CGI. Nearly 40 years after the original comedy was released in 1988, the Oscar-nominated actor is returning to reprise his role as the eponymous bio-exorcist in the upcoming sequel, which is once again directed by Tim Burton and officially titled Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Other than Keaton, the Beetlejuice 2 cast includes returning stars Winona Ryder and Catherine O'Hara alongside new additions like Jenna Ortega, Monica Bellucci, Willem Dafoe, and Justin Theroux.

In a new interview with PEOPLE ahead of the Beetlejuice 2 release date later this year, Keaton praised Burton's sequel for prioritizing practical effects in favor of CGI. The star and director agreed that the sequel, similar to the original film, shouldn't become a CGI spectacle, saying "It had to feel handmade." Read Keaton's full comments below:

The one thing that he and I decided on early, early, early on from the beginning, if we ever did it again, I was totally not interested in doing something where there was too much technology.

It had to feel handmade. What made it fun was watching somebody in the corner actually holding something up for you, to watch everybody in the shrunken head room and say, "Those are people under there, operating these things, trying to get it right."

It's the most exciting thing. When you get to do that again after years of standing in front of a giant screen, pretending somebody's across the way from you, this is just enormous fun.
